UPDATE: Android Amateur Hour has run its course and so we will not be having these anymore, for a while at least. We may start it up again once we get a space of our own.

A few of us have started up a new bi-weekly event that we are calling “Android Amateur Hour.” We started this up in order to create a time and a place where MAG Lab members and the public at large can gather together every now and then to share some of the experiences and insights that we have gleaned while trying to learn how to program with Android. We are all learning at our own pace and in our spare time. We are also just starting out with this language so the “Amateur” in the event’s name is apt.

Our goal is to eventually become somewhat proficient in the language. I think that it would be fun to be able to play around with basic app design. The hackerspace has a few potential projects that will be pretty awesome if we can integrate some communication with smartphones. However, some of us are also really curious about what kinds of things might be possible with the AR glasses that google is planning on releasing later this year and would like to be in a better position to play around with them once they are released.

You don’t have to be a member of MAG Lab to join in on an Android Amateur Hour. Our “textbook” for the time being is Learning Android by Marko Gargenta. Right now, they are being held every other Tuesday night starting at 6pm at Characters Sports Bar in Pomona (Sorry, 21 and older only). The meetings usually run a couple of hours and are pretty laid back. So, please join us if you are interested. Tomorrow night is our next next night on the cycle.
